This took me a long time to finish, mostly because I got bored about a quarter of the way through. Luckily the book picks up again around the half-way point and things start to get really interesting. I wasn’t too keen on the pseudo-Japanese world, I think I would have liked to better if it was just Japan with Magic, but at least the world-building was good. On the whole I did like this book, but I have no desire to read the rest of the series. This is just one of those books that doesn’t do it for me, but if you liked “Memoirs of a Geisha” or the Sano Ichiro series as well as fantasy novels you’ll like this book.
